The highly popular and preferred glass-backed designs can be traced back to more than 8 to 9 years ago when a super popular brand first released its latest smartphone model. Today, however, following that renowned brand, other brands are also going for glass-backed phones, selling them quite expensive because of the material used.
Journey of the glass-backed cell phones
Even though the back of the iPhone was made using glass in 2010, Apple switched back to metal for the subsequent designs. Glass was not a common material for the phone back at that time as it is quite fragile and as a result, the glass-backed phones were few. However, things soon started to change when the glass-backed phones returned with cool benefits.
The overall number of smartphones with glass backs has seen an increase by 60% by the end of the year 2020 whereas this figure was just 7% back in the year 2016. These days, most of the expensive smartphones from top competing brands feature a classy glass-back design. One can say that glass-backed phones are definitely in trend!
How the glass-backed smartphones become popular?
When compared to other materials such as aluminum, glass though fragile, has several advantages. Glass can become very smooth after repeated polishing, offering a much better translucent look and feel than silver, hard aluminum. It is also easier to mold. Additionally, glass is RF transmission friendly. Wondering why glass-backed phones got popularized in recent times? Well, the answer is related to wireless charging. It is a bit hard to efficiently transfer electricity if the back of the smartphone is made from metal, making wireless charging ineffective. Glass is friendliest to wireless charging.
